HP Cyber Monday Sale Underway on Sunday

HP Pavilion Entertainment LogoHewlett-Packard, or HP, has announced that the HP Cyber Monday sale is on now. HP, which is the largest PC maker in the world, has sales in many different product categories, with up to 60 percent in savings.

The HP Cyber Monday Sale will last 4 days. This gives consumers until Dec. 2nd to save big on HP hardware. Examples include up to $545 in savings on the HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition Series Notebook, as well as up to $545 in savings on the HP Pavilion Elite e9280t Series Customizable Desktop PC. Consumers should be warned that some oof these deals include the always annoying mail-in rebate.

Other HP Cyber Monday deals include printer sales. You can save up to 50 percent on HP all-in-one printers. HP is offering free shipping on many items as well.

Other HP Cyber Monday deals include a free gift card worth up to $20
when you buy 2 HP ink cartridges. You'll also get free next day delivery on the inks.

Those with laser printers, rather than inkjet printers, can see similar HP Cyber Monday gift card savings. If you buy two toner cartridges, you can get a $30 gift card. Once again, you will receive as free next-day delivery.

In fact, the start of Cyber Monday sales on Sunday raises the question that has already been asked by some analysts. That is, how relevant is Cyber Monday? As more people gain access to broadband, does Cyber Monday even matter any longer? That's a question to be answered as sales figures for HP's Cyber Monday sale, and others, roll in.

Review: HP Pavilion Elite e9250 from Hardware Geeks By Michael

Last week HP Loaned me their Elite e9250 Pavilion desktop which features a Intel Core i5-750 processor, 6 Gigs of memory, NVIDIA GeForce GT 2200 1GB, and of course Windows 7 64-bit.

I only had about a week with the system and since that normally isn’t enough time to fully gauge how well a system can perform, I decided to make it my main machine for the time I had it so that I could spend as much time on it as I could.hp pavilion entertainment e9250

The e9250 has a similar design to previous HP Pavilion desktops with minor differences. For example it has the 15 in 1 memory card reader at the top of the system like previous Pavilions. But now it has an HDD and Wi-Fi indicator to the right of the memory card slots and to the left of the slots are also two USB ports.

While HP Pavilions in the past have had two USB ports on the front of the case, they typically were hidden behind a door. This was cool but if you owned a flip camera or any bulky device, that door got in the way when connecting to the USB ports. This made the USB ports unusable unless you used some sort of USB cable extender. So moving the USB ports up top is a big plus for me.

There is also an expansion bay for an HP Pocket Media drive. Which will come in Handy when using the Easy Backup button. But any external or internal HDD will work with the HP Easy Backup.

The first thing I did was uninstall all the preloaded software with the exception of Norton 2010 which I like. I then installed the day to day software I typically use. For those curious I use AIM, Live Messenger, FileZilla, Office 2007, Adobe Air (FedEx Desktop and Twitterific), and Dropbox.

After all that was installed, the system handled itself as if there was nothing installed. In the past I would recommend reformatting the drive and do a clean install of the OS but HP and other OEMS have cut back on the crapware they install on their systems and I no longer think that is necessary.

Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Word all loaded quickly. I was able to multi task without any noticeable system slowdown, which is crucial if you are a heavy multi-tasker.
The system handled all of my day to day apps easily. I wouldn’t have expected anything less than what I got. But what I really wanted to test was how well it was to game on the system.

So I installed the four games I tend to play the most. Crysis, Flight Simulator X, The Sims 3 and WoW. Out of those four games the most resource intensive one is Crysis followed by Flight Simulator.

It handled Cysis beautifully and a lot of credit for that goes to the GeForce GT 2200. The graphics were amazing and while I am not a huge NVIDIA Fan I have to give them props because the GT2200 satisfied my craving for amazing gaming! (Yes I was trying to rhyme)

Playing Crysis with all its settings high is no easy feat. The system also handled Flight Simulator, the Sims 3 and WoW beautifully.

If you are a huge Sims fan, when playing the Sims 3 on this system I noticed no lag. If you played the sims you may have noticed when moving your character around a room with a lot of items in it, the system can begin to lag. I never experienced that with the e9250.

I wanted to run some PC Mark and 3D Mark test on the system but both kept giving me scores that did not seem accurate, so I didn’t want to post them. I suspect that I have some driver issue on the system that was causing the odd results. If I am able to fix the problem before I send the system back to HP I will update this post with the results.

Overall HP has given us a great desktop, but I for one would like one without the expansion bay for the Pocket Media Drive.

But if you are on the market for a new system the e9250 is one I think you should definitely look into as I think it is perfect for the gamer in all of us. The e9259 has a medium form factor which would make it a great system for someone in a small apartment or a college student in a dorm. It would also make a great day to day family computer as well.

The HP Pavilion e9250 has a starting price of $799 the system I tested will cost you $964.99.

HP Pavilion P6230y Reviews by CNET

HP Pavilion Entertainment P6230y

Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Holiday Roundup, which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.

The $680 Pavilion P6230y is another midrange HP desktop PC that looks good on paper, but can't keep up with the competition in price and performance. It can certainly handle its own in day-to-day use, but the competing Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004 makes this Pavilion look slow and overpriced.

Not a whole lot has changed on the P6230y since we reviewed its cheaper sibling, the p6110y. Most of the desktops that take a turn through our labs have a similar black, glossy case; but HP adds flashy accents like a soft-blue LED-lit power button and a sliding panel on the face of the system that conceals the media card reader and front USB 2.0 and audio ports. Aesthetically speaking, we're confident that this system will fit anywhere without causing a stir.

HP Pavilion P6230y Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004
Price $680 $650
CPU 2.6GHz AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300

Hard drives 750GB, 7,200rpm 1TB, 7,200rpm
Optical drive dual-layer DVD burner dual-layer DVD burner
Networking 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless, 10/100/1,000 Ethernet LAN 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN
Operating system Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

The most glaring difference in a side-by-side comparison with the Asus Essentio CG5270-BP004 is the HP's diminutive quad-core AMD chip, which is left in the dust in performance and power efficiency tests by the Asus's quad-core Intel CPU, even despite a slightly faster clock speed. For $30 less than the HP, Asus offers more storage room to offset the lack of built-in wireless, which can be easily had thanks to the Asus' ample expansion space.

Since the Asus actually costs less than the HP, the Pavilion P6230y essentially offers less computer for more money than the competition. Thankfully, HP is more generous with its port offerings than its computing power. You get two USB ports on the front of the tower, with six more ports around the back, along with 7.1 analog audio, coaxial digital audio, FireWire, VGA, DVI, Ethernet, and a built-in wireless networking card. Neither system has an eSATA port nor do we suspect that most users would miss it. However, you can definitely find it on other PCs in this price range.

Before you make a buying decision in favor of HP, consider that the P2630y comes in second to the Asus in almost every test except for the Cinebench tests that give credit to the highest clock speeds. The only system that gives Asus a run is the ZT Affinity 7334Ma, but keep in mind that the extra processor speed will cost you $120 more than the HP and $150 more than the Asus.

Upgraders still intent on buying this PC for whatever reason will find ample room inside the tower for future upgrades. You get a free 16x PCI Express graphics slot, three 1x PCI Express slots, and room for one more hard drive if you can get past the awkwardly placed cage that stands vertically against the back wall of the interior. Also, keep in mind that if you plan to upgrade memory down the line, you'll need to discard the existing RAM since all four slots are currently occupied.

Annual energy consumption cost $27.14

The HP Pavilion P6230y fares well against the competition in the energy cost required to keep it running for a year. Coming in at just a few cents more than $27, HP manages to keep costs low, although the P5230y doesn't have much hardware inside to threaten your monthly energy bill. With a video chip integrated into the motherboard that handles all standard desktop applications and a newer AMD chip, we're not surprised that HP trends toward the more efficient end of the power draw spectrum.

We used the Asus system as this HP's primary competition because their prices are identical and they have similar features sets. We'd say Asus won the hardware match-up; however, service and support is a different story. HP's support offerings, on par with Dell or Gateway, give you one year of parts and labor warranty protection, as well 24-7 toll-free phone support. We also appreciate its vast array of support help online, including live support chat. At least for now, HP has the upper hand in customer service.

HP’s Pavilion DM1 is still yet to show up for pre-order on the company’s US site (though the support pages are full of information) but that hasn’t stopped Netbooked from grabbing one of the 11.6-inch ultraportables for review. They reckon the DM1 “fares decently” among its peers, though they’re not impressed by the amount of screen flex on show (you can press the trackpad buttons by pushing down on the edge of the lid when closed).
hp pavilion entertainment dm1 review

Similarly, the keyboard is more cramped than on other 11.6-inch machines, with Netbooked blaming the wasted space either side. That leaves you with smaller-than-normal function keys, while the trackpad is also cramped and lacks multitouch support.

On the positive side, it runs at 1,366 x 768 resolution, can handle 1080p Full HD video playback and manages to squeeze in a 6-cell battery with no protrusions. That battery is good for around 4.5hrs normal use, too. What we still don’t know is how much HP USA will be charging for the Pavilion DM1; HP Japan are asking the equivalent of around $686.

HP Pavilion DM1 dual-core netbook reviewed

HP Pavilion Entertainment DM1

Somewhere in the space between Atom netbooks and full-blown laptops, there’s a space for the HP Pavilion DM1. With an Intel SU2300 dual core CPU under the hood, this ultrathin is powerful enough to compete with chunkier notebooks while thin and light enough to feel like a netbook.

Netbooked has gotten their hands on one, and bottom line is that the DM1 is a decent machine and competitive with other 11.6” models available like the Acer Aspire 1410 and Lenovo U150.

Out-of-the-box, the dual-core SU2300 was able to handle 720p video on YouTube, though 1080p playback was only possible with an upgrade to Flash Player 10.1.

Battery life from the 6-cell lithium ion powerpack was decent at about 4 hours and 20 minutes under normal use and 3 hours and 13 minutes watching a looped 1080p video.

In the review, the DM1 loses points for its keyboard. While offering a solid feel and good tactile response, the overall size is more what you’d expect to find on a 10” netbook. Hey, I generally love the keyboards on HP’s netbooks, but the extra width on its deck feels like a missed opportunity for something a bit larger.

Netbooked also had a couple of issues with the DM1’s touchpad. Apart from stiff, noisy buttons, it also has no support for gestures. That could be a major disappointment for some users, since plenty of smaller, less expensive models can handle multi-touch.

Taiwan market: HP launches Blu-ray equipped high-end notebook

Hewlett-Packard (HP) on November 18 launched a Blu-ray equipped high-end gaming notebook, the Pavilion dv8, manufactured by Quanta Computer in the Taiwan market priced NT$72,900 (US$2,269).

The HP Pavilion dv8 adopts an Intel quad-core Core i7-720QM CPU, 18-inch display, Nvidia's graphics card with 1GB video memory, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and 1TB hard drive.

Due to the high cost of Blu-ray notebook, market demand is still limited, according to HP Taiwan.

Currently, Blu-ray notebooks contribute about 5% of HP Taiwan's total revenues and the share is even smaller in terms of shipments. The company expects the model's revenue contribution for 2010 to remain flat.

HP also announced a 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6 notebook without Blu-ray drive priced at NT$57,900, also made by Quanta and a desktop, the Pavilion HPE using an Intel Core i5 CPU, and made by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry).

Blu-ray drives are currently priced about US$100, still a large gap between DVD burner's US$20; however, with Blu-ray drive prices dropping, more Blu-ray equipped notebooks are expected to launch in the second half of 2010, according to sources at optical drive makers.

HP Pavilion All-in-One MS214 Review

HP Pavilion Entertainment MS1
We've all done it: walked out of a store having spent more than we planned walking in. HP is hoping that consumers will walk out having spent $600 -- that instead of just buying a software upgrade for an aging system, they'll take the opportunity offered by the arrival of Windows 7 to treat themselves to a spiffy new all-in-one PC.

The Pavilion MS214 not only has Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled, it has the classy one-piece design of a more costly Apple iMac or HP TouchSmart (though it doesn't have the latter's touch screen). Its 18.5-inch LCD is bigger than the old 15- or 17-inch CRT it'll likely replace. Its setup is as simple as plugging in the mouse, keyboard, and power cord. It comes with HP's slick MediaSmart software for managing photos, videos, and music, as well as a webcam and WiFi. And while $600 isn't exactly an impulse buy, it's only a couple of hundred bucks more than a cheap conventional PC -- one that doesn't offer the "simple, elegant, and tower-free desktop" touted by the advertising sticker on the HP's front bezel.

On the other hand, HP is gambling that smart shoppers (or shoppers helped by smart salesclerks) won't mistake the MS214 for a mere nettop like the Asus Eee Top 1602 or eMachines EZ1601. Instead of a nettop's humble, one-core Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM, the Pavilion boasts an AMD Athlon X2 3250e -- a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU with two times 512K of Level 2 cache -- and 2GB of DDR2 memory, as well as a 320GB hard disk and a DVD±RW burner. And while it's no fire-breathing gamer, the HP's ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics easily outshine the ignominious Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics of nettops and netbooks.

No Obvious Omissions

The all-in-one would be a natural fit for a cordless keyboard and mouse, but economy apparently dictated a keyboard and mouse that take two of the four USB 2.0 ports at the machine's rear. The two input devices are generic pieces, an optical mouse with scroll wheel and a keyboard with audio volume controls and a medium-firm, moderately rattly typing feel. The four USB ports occupy the rear panel alongside the socket for the HP's laptop-style AC adapter and audio and Ethernet ports. Families with a WiFi router at home can ignore the Ethernet port and hook up to the Internet via 802.11b/g wireless.

Two more USB ports, headphone and microphone jacks and a six-in-one (SD/SDHC/MMC/xD/MS/MS Pro) flash-card reader are accessibly located on the left side of the display; the right side holds up and down buttons for screen brightness and the eject button for the DVD±RW drive. The power button is at bottom right of the front bezel.

HP Pavilion Entertainment MS2

The system stands about 15.5 by 18.5 by 8 inches. There's no height adjustment for the display, but a good range of tilt, and it's easy to swivel the unit from side to side. The display follows today's 16:9 HD-screen-ratio fashion, albeit at a lowish resolution of 1,366 by 768 pixels; it's enough for 720p videos, however. More important, the screen is bright and sharp, with vivid colors and crisp text and icons. The built-in speakers are no threat to Bose or Bang & Olufsen, but perfectly fine for enjoying online audio and CDs or DVDs.

We've already mentioned MediaSmart, which offers a friendly mini-menu of music, photo, video, webcam, and DVD tools adapted from HP's swanky TouchSmart desktop software. These top Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center by providing a variety of ways to browse, organize, and enjoy CDs, MP3s, images, and videos. Other bundled software includes CyberLink's suite of CD and DVD burning and backup tools, Microsoft Works, and a 60-day trial of Norton Internet Security.

HP+Pavilion Entertainment MS3
Ambling Right Along

The HP isn't built for benchmark speed tests (its Windows Experience Index, dragged down by sub-Aero-worthy graphics, is a wimpy 2.9 on the operating system's 7.9-point scale). But we were curious, so we can report that the MS214 rendered Cinebench R10's sample scene in five and a half minutes. That's slow compared to the minute or two required by a deluxe quad-core desktop, but it's like lightning next to the 17 minutes taken by a nettop such as the eMachines EZ1601 -- whose SysMark 2007 Preview score and Quake III Arena game frames per second the HP nearly doubled at 63 and 103, respectively.

Of course, Quake III is 10 years old; cutting-edge modern games like Crysis won't run on the MS214, but its 3DMark06 score of 1,021 (versus the eMachines' 83) shows it's viable as a puzzle- or strategy-gaming platform if not a first-person shooter. Performance in everyday applications is perky enough; some dialog boxes take a moment to appear instead of popping up instantly, but we never felt we were being kept waiting.

We like the idea of the Pavilion All-in-One very much. There's no reason that the majority of PC users who don't care about expansion slots and vacant drive bays can't be satisfied with a stylish one-piece desktop (although speaking of drive bays reminds us to ask for an eSATA port next time). And there's no reason for one-piece desktops to bear hefty price premiums. Three or four gigabytes of memory would be better than two, but the MS214 avoids the weaknesses of nettops and delivers a solid computing experience.

We don't give it higher praise because it has competition: When we reviewed the Lenovo C300, we noted the availability of a $549 configuration with a dual-core Atom CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 20-inch LCD. That's more memory and a bigger screen for $50 less. HP must be hoping that shoppers don't stray into the Lenovo aisle.

Why is the HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition a good choice for you?

The dv7t quad edition is a very interesting laptop and it takes some time to discover its full potential. The liquid-metallic finish is very smooth and everyone is very excited about it. Powered by an Intel Core i7-720QM processor working at a frequency of 1.6 GHz and 1333 MHz FSB and running the new Microsoft Windows 7, this laptop is a tamed beast. It comes with 4GB of DDR3 memory (2 Dimm) and can be upgraded up to 8 GB DDR3. HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition's 7200 rpm SATA hard drive has a storage capacity of 320 GB and comes with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection.

If you have worries regarding the graphics, you should know that graphics are powered by the Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, with 1 GB memory. A very bright and crisp 17.3-inch diagonal High Definition LED widescreen provides a very high image quality. The HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition comes equipped with a LightScribe SuperMulti 8x DVD+/-RW.

Some minor problems with the HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition

Since a laptop this powerful needs a lot of power to run, you get a 8 Cell Lithium-Ion battery that will keep it running for up to 3 hours. Given its specifications, this is a little disappointing. The HP Pavilion dv7t has a built-in subwoofer. However, the sound quality is lower than expected. The display also has a few flaws.

Should you buy the HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition?

Although the dv7t quad edition receives only 4 out of 5 stars, it is still a very powerful and stylish laptop that delivers everything it promises. It is truly a desktop replacement and its performance results are amazing for a laptop. Aside a few problems that are not very bothering, this unit is extremely versatile. Whether you are a gaming fan or a busy businessman, you will find the HP Pavilion dv7t quite impressive!

Aside some minor issues like the short battery life, the HP Pavilion dv7t quad edition is a laptop that must be considered. With its i7-720QM processor, 4 GB RAM, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, tt has a lot to offer and we are convinced you will appreciate it more than you would appreciate a desktop.
