The HP Pavilion dv8 adopts an Intel quad-core Core i7-720QM CPU, 18-inch display, Nvidia's graphics card with 1GB video memory, 4GB of DDR3 memory, and 1TB hard drive.
Due to the high cost of Blu-ray notebook, market demand is still limited, according to HP Taiwan.
Currently, Blu-ray notebooks contribute about 5% of HP Taiwan's total revenues and the share is even smaller in terms of shipments. The company expects the model's revenue contribution for 2010 to remain flat.
HP also announced a 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6 notebook without Blu-ray drive priced at NT$57,900, also made by Quanta and a desktop, the Pavilion HPE using an Intel Core i5 CPU, and made by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry).
Blu-ray drives are currently priced about US$100, still a large gap between DVD burner's US$20; however, with Blu-ray drive prices dropping, more Blu-ray equipped notebooks are expected to launch in the second half of 2010, according to sources at optical drive makers.
